Are you drawn to working with clay and different textures? In this workshop Rupa Palasamudram will be working with students to make a functional altered vase using slab building and darting techniques to create more than just your every day slab piece.

This handbuilding workshop will focus on making a simple vase that is darted and textured. Starting with rolling out slabs to build a cylinder, then transforming this basic cylinder to give it curves and movement by using techniques to combine textures with smooth surfaces.

This Workshop will be in-person hosted at Saltstone Ceramics in the Wallingford Neighborhood of Seattle. No prior clay experience needed as this workshop will cater to all skill levels.

Rupa has been exploring with clay since she first started taking classes at a community center in Boulder, CO in 1997. Later, as a student, an apprentice, and an occasional instructor at Clayworks in Binghamton, NY, she had the opportunity to learn and experiment with firing techniques such as high fire reduction, Raku, and pit/sawdust. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, the primary focus of Rupa's work is making day-to-day functional ware on the wheel. She loves working with wheel thrown forms and altering them to create one-of-a-kind pieces with a focus on function and aesthetics. she loves to play with textures and try to integrate them onto the surfaces of her work. As Rupa explores different clays and methods of constructions and various surface decorating techniques, she's become drawn to the different methods of firing as well, resulting in a constant transformation of her work.

The materials will be provided on-site. All firing services are included in cost, and the instructor will glaze your pieces in a clear for you.
