A maneki-neko (translation: beckoning cat) is a common fixture of shops and homes in Japan as they're believed to bring good luck/money/customers. A traditional maneki-neko holds a koban (gold coin that equals one ryo) with one paw and has the other paw raised in a beckoning gesture. There is significance to whether the right or left paw is raised. Left to get more customers (shops) and right for more money (home). May it bring you wealth.
