This workshop provides an introduction to surface decoration techniques and how to embrace vibrant color on clay work. We will practice an array of decorating techniques including inlay, sgraffito, slip trailing, and stencil resist creating opportunities for surface design development in our studio practices. Using underglaze we will explore expanding the commercial palette to create tints, shades, and customs colors. From mixing to application, this workshop will provide a guide to gaining underglaze color control. Students will be creating tiles to experiment with surface design and new decorating techniques.

Previous clay experience is recommended, but not required. This workshop is open for students 15 and older.

Student Materials List (Suggested Materials):
Xacto knife with *#11 blade
*Pencils, *pens
Sketchbook (or notebook for notes)
1” – 1.5” Hake Slip brush (2-3)
Various soft bristle brushes
Plastic containers with lids (at least 5-10 for mixing custom colors,
can be up-cycled food containers)
Bisqueware (optional if they have some)
Apron (optional)
Mudtools: *red and *yellow ribs / *small surform
Sgraffito tools

The materials will be provided on-site. All firing services are included in the cost, and the studio will finish your pieces in a clear glaze.

Students should be prepared to take home leather hard work or pick up bisque fired work at a later date

Adrienne Eliades is a studio potter and educator living in Vancouver, Washington. She earned a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2008 and an MFA from University of Florida in 2016. Ceramics Monthly named her an Emerging Artist in 2018. In addition to maintaining a vibrant studio practice, Adrienne is the HOT CLAY Program Coordinator for Idyllwild Arts Summer Program in Idyllwild, California and has presented over 20 workshops nationwide.

There will be a lunch break; bring a sack lunch or visit one of the fantastic lunch spots in the neighborhood
