Join us for a two-day journey into the art of storytelling through clay.

This workshop will guide you in handbuilding a tall vase and transforming it into a canvas for personal narrative. You’ll learn techniques to sculpt expressive details, push forms outward from within, and adorn your piece with decorative elements inspired by your imagination.

On the first day of this workshop, we will handbuild our vases using the pinch and coil method. We will also cover attachments and pushing out from the inside of our pieces for sculpting. We will talk about narrative and decoration on ceramics and form ideas for finishing our pieces.  On the second day of this workshop, we will learn how to prep our pieces for decoration with slip and how to draw through the slip in a traditional process called scgrafitto.

It is encouraged that each student comes with an idea in mind for what type of vase they’d want to build, but making those creative decisions will also be discussed in class.

Ryana is currently a teacher at Saltstone. She recently completed an Artist in Residence at Pottery Northwest from 2023-2019. Ryana received her MFA from Pennsylvania State University in 2019. In 2017, she was an Artist in Residence at Flower City Arts back in Rochester, and received a post-baccalaureate education from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2016. She graduated with a BFA from The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2015.  She has exhibited her work nationally.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels, but recommended for students 18+.

This Workshop will be in-person hosted at Saltstone Ceramics in the Wallingford Neighborhood of Seattle. No prior clay experience needed as this workshop will cater to all skill levels. The materials will be provided on-site. All firing services are included in cost, and the studio will glaze your pieces in a clear for you.

Workshop registration is time/class-specific and is non-refundable. We no longer provide refunds for COVID-19. If you can't attend your workshop, we encourage you to give your spot to a friend.
