Tea in the Mojave by Paula Diaz-Sylvester

This lidded mug, which doubles as a decorative conversation piece, was made using brown stoneware and commercial food safe glazes fired to cone 5 in an electric kiln. The mug body and lid were wheel thrown, the handle and decorations on the lid were hand built. The initial idea was to use a Moroccan tile design on the mug body and title this work "Tea in the Sahara" (a play on The Police's song); however, I found that cacti are not native to the Sahara desert, thus the idea evolved into "Tea in the Mojave" which prompted me to choose a pattern in the style of Southwestern Native American pottery. To obtain a sharp finish, I custom designed vinyl stencils that masked the fine unglazed lines. The mug dimensions are 4"H x 6"W x 4.5"D and it can hold approximately 12 ounces. Including the lid, this work is 7" tall.
