Sgraffito Coaster Sets, with Jem Tong, May 24th, 12pm - 4pm

Dive into the world of sgraffito! Sgraffito is the art of carving through layers of slip to reveal the clay body beneath: combining drawing, texture, and surface design into bold, graphic results. Students will explore sgraffito as both a technical skill and a form of personal expression.

Students will start thee workshop with a tile exploration in sgraffito. Practicing different carving techniques in the process. Once you've practiced the skills, you will then be focused on the larger Sgraffito project making sgraffito coaster sets.

This all-levels class is recommended for students 15 years and older. The pottery wheel will not be used in this workshop.

The materials will be provided on-site. All firing services are included in cost, and an instructor will glaze your pieces in a clear for you.

Jem Tong (they/them): Hi! My name is Jem Tong. Pottery is my home medium but I enjoy dabbling in just about everything else. My personal work is mainly in clay instruments and moving, dynamic carvings. I have taught since 2022 in CA and WA, and been touching clay since 2014: I love sharing the grounding nature of shaping things with your own hands and meeting so many cool people that pottery attracts.
