In this 4-week class, students will explore a variety of surface decoration techniques for clay, with a focus on building layered, intentional imagery. You’ll leave the class with several hand built plates, platters, or tiles that showcase your personal visual language and creative approach to surface.

Throughout the course, we’ll work with underglazes, slips, sgraffito, and inlay techniques to create rich surfaces and imagery. Students are encouraged to come in with ideas for images, patterns, or themes they’d like to explore, though guided prompts and examples will be provided. This class is ideal for students interested in slowing down, experimenting, and developing confidence in surface design.

Our friendly, experienced instructors create a supportive atmosphere that encourages exploration and skill-building at your own pace. Through the course you’ll learn these essential techniques:

  • Planning and designing a cohesive set
  • Mishima, layered slips, underglaze, and paper resist techniques.
  • Refining forms & managing clay at different stages
  • Surface refinement & glazing techniques

Students who are enrolled in our 4-week intensives also get access to the studio during designated Open Studio times: come in and practice!

At the end of this 4-week class, you’ll come away with a new-found appreciation for this ancient art form, confidence in your new skills... and your very own handmade pottery!

And the fine print:

  • While this class is geared towards beginners, everyone is welcome.
  • Our beautiful studio has just about everything you need, except for a simple set of pottery tools. Bring your own or purchase one of pottery essentials sets available at the studio on your first day of class.
